Foreword
bremenports GmbH & Co. KG

Sustainability is essential for a good future

Last year bremenports commissioned a comprehensive study to ascertain how the ports of Bremen are regarded and assessed. One important finding was that the participants stated that in terms of sustainability, our ports have meanwhile gained a significant advantage over the competition. This result will change the brand presentation of the ports of Bremen. In future, we will continue to develop our sustainability strategy and make it a key element of our activities to promote the ports of Bremen.

This welcome image of our ports is the result of a port policy that has been systematically geared to sustainability for decades. Port policies can only succeed if there is smooth interaction between all the stakeholders, which is why it is so important to pay due attention to the wishes and demands of the port community. To ensure that our sustainability management lives up to the expectations of our stakeholders, in 2021 we conducted an online survey in which the participants had the opportunity to tell us what they expected of a sustainability strategy.

The survey identified generic areas of action which will in future form the basis of our sustainability management. Economic success is an essential aspect of all forward-looking port development. Accordingly, the competitiveness of the port is a central element of a successful sustainability strategy. A forward-looking port is environmentally compatible and helps to mitigate climate change. Social responsibility, for instance in the form of good working conditions, is an equally important element of a sustainability strategy as is a participative approach, which banks on cooperation with the port community. This Sustainability Report elaborates the strategic dimension of that policy transparently and in detail.

Joining forces for a strong port: parallel to this latest Sustainability Report, we are also drawing up the Port Development Concept 2035, which again focuses strongly on in-depth cooperation with business enterprises, professional associations and the science community. Participation will also be a central module of our sustainable port strategy in future.

This Sustainability Report is based on the key performance indicators for 2020 and 2021 and also takes into account data up to March 2022. It is published online and will, of course, be available as a download on the bremenports website.

In addition to countless facts about the sustainability strategy of the ports of Bremen, the report also features diverse interviews that provide interesting and in-depth information about adaptation to climate change, working conditions in marine shipping, and energy management.

The Sustainability Report thus provides a comprehensive picture of port development.

And it also reveals one thing absolutely clearly: the ports of Bremen are right on course for a sustainable future.
